As a result of our hard work and rapid growth in the world of EdTech, Hugo, one of Kognity’s founders, was invited to speak at EdTechXEurope, which kicked off in London last month. EdTechXEurope is Europe’s largest EdTech Conference. The annual summit brings together more than 800 entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and investors, who gather to share ideas in their common pursuit of improving education worldwide.
The talk delivered by Hugo revolved around his own experiences as a two-time entrepreneur in the education sector. The main focus was the story of Kognity’s growth, now being used in hundreds of schools in over 50 countries just two years after launch.
Perhaps the most important point raised by Hugo was the excessive focus placed by EdTech startups on how to make products as scalable and disruptive as possible, and how this can be detrimental to what should be the real aim: providing value. Scalability and disruption are two concepts that have dominated mentalities in Tech Startups for years. But in EdTech specifically, while these are still important concepts, they have to give way to other aims. There are many cases where this misplaced focus has caused entrepreneurs and investors to miss opportunities to deliver real value to students and teachers around the world.
Hugo argued that while disruption can be good in certain situations, schools have strong ecosystems that cannot and should not be disrupted. Rather, EdTech companies should adapt to them. In pursuit of scalability, many companies do not want to create detailed curriculum adaptations of their digital learning content, heavily reducing the relevance of their products.
In essence, the point brought up was that many EdTech startups would benefit from taking a step back and thinking about what would actually bring real value to students and teachers. The sooner leaders in EdTech solve real problems in schools, rather than just focusing on building scalable and disruptive business models, the better.
